Thrifty Threads: Earth Day Edition

Welcome to another installment of Thrifty Threads, AKA Most Stylish Compact-y outfit, where readers model their favorite secondhand clothes.

A Compact-y outfit is used or recycled, from Goodwill, a thrift store, a consignment shop, a yard sale, craigslist, ebay, or anywhere else you find secondhand clothing.

Today's model is yours truly, finally getting into the swing of buying used clothing. I found this whimsical and original t-shirt at a high-end consignment shop on the half-off rack, which came to $7. It's hand appliqued and sequined in a cute design and I love the colors. The jean jacket appeared to be brand new and fit me perfectly, and set me back $9 at Goodwill. I'm very happy with that purchase because I've never found a jean jacket that was both fitted AND comfortable.

Okay readers, it's your turn. I'm getting very low on photos, so please put on your favorite thrift store score, snap a photo, and send it to me at barton.angela@gmail.com. We all want to see your fabulous finds. Any age and size is welcome, but I would particularly love to see some pretty spring dresses, florals, and bright colors. Something festive and fun now that winter is finally coming to an end.

Please tell us your favorite tips for secondhand shopping in the Comments section. And click here if you'd like to check out previous installments of Thrifty Threads.

I love your t-shirt! I am glad that you have found some resources for second hand clothing. Both items are great finds!

Yesterday, my daughter asked if we could visit the thrift stores this weekend to pick up some summer tops for her and my oldest son. I will send you photos if we are successful.

Hi Angela. I know, I know – I owe you a photo!

What better message on Earth Day than highlighting how fabulous you can look in second-hand clothing. There is so much expensive ‘eco’ fashion (i.e., organic cotton), but second-hand is affordable to everyone and all of these great clothes are already produced. Have fun continuing to find these treasures.

Happy Earth Day!

Alea- Thanks! Yes, the t-shirt is very cute on its own but I decided to combine it for the photo with the jacket, and I probably will wear them together until it gets really hot. Yes, I found two great consignment stores, and one of them has brands I wouldn't be able to afford new: Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, etc.

Catherine- I would LOVE to get a photo of you in one of those cute dresses I've seen on your blog. Yes, I think my greatest contribution to earth day is just being on the Compact. And I agree that often used is more green than new that's marketed as green.

Marie-Josee- Thanks, I was pretty surprised because I don't consider myself good or lucky at thrifting. It all has to do with finding a shop that has good stuff. Yesterday I went to 6 different thrift stores- Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, etc. looking for a ceramic canister for the countertop to hold scraps on their way to the compost pile, and I came up empty-handed.

NCG-This photo was taken before I got the blue streak, I just hadn't posted it yet...

Yes, I'm happy to know I'll always be able to find nice clothes when/if I need them, at the moment I'm still trying to simplify my closet...
