Food Waste Friday Follies

I realized after I wrote last week's post that I had meant to say "follies" and not "food waste friday frolics." So here it is Friday again, and I bring you my folly...

No picture, no waste! So I'll make this short. Every week I take photos of my food waste, a concept started by Kristen at The Frugal Girl, in order to be more aware of how much food we're throwing out. So far we're wasting a lot less than we used to, which saves money and is better for the environment.

Check out this cool site "Love Food, Hate Waste" to find out about why cutting food waste matters.

How did you do this week? Let us know in the Comments section.

You, Kristen, and some of the others are inspiring me to be more careful. Thank you for that. I am sorry that I do have some waste but I think I'm still in the process of clearing out some old things hiding in the fridge and... just kind of struggling with learning to buy and prepare no more than we can eat. I am tossing about a half cup of leftover bean soup with some elderly rice put into it. I think I have a single slice of bread which I may feed to the birds (does that count?). There is a tomato whose skin shriveled way too fast on me but I may be able to save at least part of it. There is some cheddar cheese which I've been avoiding. It was a store brand instead of a name brand and frankly it's not very good. I either need to figure out how to use it or, sigh, toss it. A not-very-good half loaf of French bread is languishing and will expire if I don't do something with it soon. Croutons? Sounds good.

I'm so glad to get the push to do this.

thanks for giving me a giggle about "frolics", although I must admit I didn't even notice last week.

Carla- Like everything with me, the food waste issue has been all about baby steps. You've taken the important step of starting to notice it, and you'll start buying less. That's the best way I've found to waste less. And yes, croutons are so easy! I just started making them this year and I couldn't believe I bought them before. Homemade are much tastier! All I do is cut stale bread into squares and then pour some olive oil to coat- salt and pepper and maybe some fresh herbs or garlic salt. Bake in the oven until crisp- maybe 10 minutes at 400 degrees? I can't even remember...

ksmedgirl- I'm glad to know my silly mistake wasn't too glaringly obvious! They're both good words though- frolics and follies!

I've made croutons in the past, it's just that I don't think before I toss. Typical, huh? Anyway I did make croutons Friday afternoon and they are definitely quite good. Now I'm wondering about other little tidbits left in the fridge — how they will be taken care of. I'm not sure I want to heat and eat 1/4 cup of split pea soup. Not really enough to eat but too much to throw away, you know? I guess I need to have a clean up lunch tomorrow, LOL.

I discovered something new last week - 'leftover soup! You take all your leftovers, dump them in a pan and add water or broth. Voila - waste busters! Of course, this doesn't work for everything (ie I wouldn't throw cake in the soup). But it sure 'changes it up'.
